Metal Build Evangelion EVA Unit-00 Review: Premium Collectible or Overhyped?

The Metal Build line from Tamashii Nations has long been the gold standard for premium action figures, combining die-cast metal frames with intricate detailing. When the Evangelion EVA Unit-00 Proto Type was announced, fans of the iconic anime series were eager to see if it could match the excellence of its predecessors. This review dives deep into the figure's design, articulation, accessories, and overall value to help you decide if it's a worthy addition to your collection.

We'll examine every aspect of the Metal Build EVA Unit-00, from its striking color scheme to its posability and included extras. Whether you're a seasoned collector or a newcomer to the world of premium figures, this review will provide the insights you need.

Design and Build Quality

The Metal Build EVA Unit-00 Proto Type captures the iconic look of the original Evangelion with remarkable accuracy. The figure features a predominantly white and gray color scheme with yellow accents, faithfully reproducing the Unit-00's appearance from the anime. The use of die-cast metal in the frame gives it a satisfying weight, making it feel substantial in hand. The plastic parts are well-molded with crisp panel lines and subtle shading that enhance the overall realism.

One of the standout features is the intricate detailing on the shoulders and torso, which include multiple layers of armor and mechanical greebles. The paint application is clean, with no noticeable overspray or sloppy edges. The figure also includes interchangeable parts to recreate the 'Proto Type' look, such as the distinctive orange shoulder pylons. This attention to detail is what sets Metal Build figures apart from standard releases.

• Die-cast metal frame for durability and weight
• Interchangeable parts for Proto Type customization
• High-quality paint with panel line accents

Articulation and Posability

Articulation is a crucial aspect of any action figure, and the Metal Build EVA Unit-00 excels in this department. The figure features an impressive range of motion, including a multi-jointed neck, shoulder pads that can move independently, and double-jointed elbows and knees. The hips are designed with a sliding mechanism that allows for deep squats and dynamic poses, essential for recreating the Evangelion's iconic combat stances.

The die-cast frame provides stability, so the figure can hold heavy poses without sagging. The hands are interchangeable, with multiple options for gripping weapons, open palms, and fists. The included progressive knife and pallet rifle can be held securely, and the figure can even wield the massive positron sniper rifle with the help of a support stand. Whether you want to display it in a relaxed standing pose or a high-action battle scene, the EVA Unit-00 delivers.

• Double-jointed elbows and knees for deep bends
• Interchangeable hands for various weapon grips
• Stable die-cast frame for dynamic poses

Accessories and Extras

A premium figure should come with a generous set of accessories, and the Metal Build EVA Unit-00 does not disappoint. The box includes two types of progressive knives, a pallet rifle, a positron sniper rifle, and a variety of hands. Additionally, there are multiple cable parts to simulate the umbilical cable, which can be attached to the back and posed dynamically. This adds a level of realism and display versatility that is often missing from other figures.

The figure also includes a dedicated display stand with a clear support arm, which is essential for aerial poses or heavy weapon displays. The stand is sturdy and adjustable, allowing you to position the figure at any angle. For collectors who enjoy customization, the interchangeable parts for the Proto Type variant offer a unique way to display the figure in two different configurations. The packaging is also collector-friendly, with a window box that showcases the figure beautifully.

• Multiple weapons including progressive knife and pallet rifle
• Umbilical cable parts for dynamic displays
• Dedicated display stand with adjustable arm

Comparison with Other Premium Figures

When comparing the Metal Build EVA Unit-00 to other premium Evangelion figures, such as the Robot Spirits series or even the Metal Robot Spirits line, the differences are clear. The Metal Build offers a higher level of detail and die-cast construction, which justifies its higher price point. For example, the Metal Robot Spirits Immortal Justice Gundam is a fantastic figure, but it doesn't have the same weight or intricate mechanical detailing as the EVA Unit-00.

If you're looking to expand your collection with other premium mecha, consider the HGCE 171 GAT-X105 Aile Strike Gundam (Revive) or the MG Gouf (Ver. 2.0) for a more traditional Gunpla experience. However, for a display piece that truly captures the essence of Evangelion, the Metal Build EVA Unit-00 stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Is It Worth the Price?

The Metal Build EVA Unit-00 comes with a premium price tag, often retailing for over $200. For many collectors, this is a significant investment. The question is whether the build quality, articulation, and accessories justify the cost. In our opinion, yes. The figure is a masterpiece of engineering and design, offering a level of detail and poseability that is hard to find elsewhere. The die-cast frame ensures longevity, and the variety of accessories provides endless display options.

That said, it's not for everyone. If you're on a budget or prefer smaller-scale figures, the Robot Spirits line might be a better fit. But for serious Evangelion fans and collectors of premium figures, the Metal Build EVA Unit-00 is a must-have. It's a centerpiece that will elevate any collection.

The Metal Build Evangelion EVA Unit-00 Proto Type is a stunning premium figure that delivers on all fronts. Its impeccable design, superior articulation, and wealth of accessories make it a worthy investment for any serious collector.
