The SPN-120 Ultimate Nipper is widely regarded as the gold standard, designed for unparalleled precision and clean cuts. Engineered in Japan with expert craftsmanship, these professional-grade side cutters feature an ultra-thin single-blade design that delivers a ultra-smooth finish with minimal stress on the plastic. Ideal for serious modelers, the SPN-120 makes removing parts from runners effortless, reducing sanding and cleanup while preserving fine details. Its ergonomic grip and razor-sharp cutting edge ensure comfort and control even during long building sessions. Usage Precautions Designed only for plastic model runners – do not use on metal, polycarbonate, or resin, as this may damage the blade. Rated for material width of <3mm (PS, PP, ABS) or <1mm (clear/translucent plastic). Avoid twisting or cutting thick gates in one motion; instead, cut in two stages for best results. The cutting edge is extremely sharp and delicate — store with the blade guard attached when not in use. Keep out of reach of children and handle with care to prevent injury.

Learn how to use them first

Do not buy these for your first 20 kits, I didn't get them for my first 20 years. Read all the instructions, watch the videos. There is a specific way and place for a blade to be used, position right, cut right. Tools when misused will break. Tools when used proper will last long. Blades should only be used to cut material they are meant to. Never "try something" with these, they are only for removing gates. Get good optics and lighting, glasses, magnifying lenses, and lots of good lights. It is a very tactile and rewarding experience, they have a great weight and balance. The spring-back is nice, the close is soft and not clampy. Review by April Aug 30, 2025

John ★★★★★

The blade alignment is so precise that even on tight curves I get a perfectly flush cut every single time. I've had mine for months of heavy building and it still feels as sharp as the day it arrived, which says a lot for the Japanese craftsmanship.

Madison ★★★★★

After a year of heavy use, the edge still hasn't dulled, and every cut on thick plastic comes out perfectly flush without any stress marks. The Japanese craftsmanship really shows in how effortlessly it glides through the sprue—it’s ruined cheaper cutters for me for good.

Miles ★★★★☆

Cuts through nub marks like they’re not even there, and the blade’s still got that sharp, clean snap after a few dozen kits. Only gripe is the price stings a bit, but for this level of precision I can’t really complain.
